Dance has been a part of my life since the age of three and I made I it through 28 years of strenuous dance classes, dance competitions, competitive coed collegiate cheerleading, and running without an injury. I currently own KD Dance Productions in St. Louis, MO where I teach 10-15 hours each week.
On February 16, 2010, while working out, I suffered a labral tear in my right hip. Being a dancer, I am truly in tune with my body and I knew that my injury was not a typical muscle pull or strain. The mere thought of not being able to dance was the scariest thing I could ever imagine. This injury would not only affect my passion, but my livelihood.
I researched my injury and initially saw Dr. Heidi Prather at the Washington University Orthopedic Clinic. Dr. Prather knew surgery was in my future and referred me to Dr. John Clohisy and my surgery was scheduled for July 26, 2010.
I’m not going to lie; it was very scary and difficult after surgery. I was immobilized in a brace that locked my hip in 60 degree angle. As a dancer, I’m use to moving all of the time. The weeks after surgery had me stir crazy and ready to walk, run, and most of all, dance. Six weeks after surgery I was able to start physical therapy and start moving again. Having always pushed my physical limits, I knew it was important to allow my body time to recover at a slow pace. Some days were definitely better than others, but I did what Dr. Clohisy told me to do and I’m very thankful I listened!
It’s been a little over a year since my surgery and I’m back to 100%! I’ve never felt better and I’m more active that I was before the injury. I’ve regained all flexibility that was lost and the most important part is that I have no pain! Whether you’re an athlete or not, injuries and the thought of surgery is terrifying. I feel very blessed to have gone to Dr. Clohisy. He not only fixed my hip, but allowed me to dance again and get my life back.
