John C. Clohisy, M.D. is the Daniel C. and Betty B. Viehmann Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University. He serves as Director of the Adolescent and Young Adult Hip Service, Co-chief of the Adult Reconstruction Service, Director of the Fellowship in Joint Preservation, Resurfacing and Reconstruction, and Director of the Orthopaedic Inpatient Service.
Dr. Clohisy received both his bachelor’s and medical degrees from Northwestern University, and he completed his internship, research fellowship, and residency in orthopaedic surgery at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He then went on to pursue an adult reconstructive surgery fellowship in the Hip and knee Implant Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard Medical School. He joined the Washington University School of Medicine faculty in 1998.
Dr. Clohisy has a clinical practice focused on hip reconstructive surgery. He has specific interest in comprehensive care of the hip. This encompasses hip preservation procedures as well as traditional primary and revision hip replacement surgeries. The evaluation and treatment of adolescents, young adults and athletes with hip disorders is a major component of his clinical practice. In these patients there is an emphasis on the treatment of hip impingement and hip dysplasia.
Dr. Clohisy has over ten years of experience in hip arthroscopy, impingement procedures, osteotomy surgery and hip replacements. He has performed over 4,000 hip procedures. Dr. Clohisy has contributed over 110 peer-reviewed scientific publications, the majority of these focusing on topics related to hip surgery.
Dr. Clohisy is a member of the International Hip Society, North American Hip Society, American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and various other professional societies. He has received multiple academic, research and grant awards. He serves as an associate editor of the American Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

The Daniel C. and Betty B. Viehmann Distinguished Professorship in Orthopaedic Surgery was established in August, 2010, and awarded to Dr. Clohisy. We are extremely grateful for the Viehmann’s generosity and vision for the future. Their contributions will facilitate our clinical care, education and research efforts. We are fully committed to fulfilling their desire to improve the lives of others.
Mr. and Mrs. Viehmann are St. Louis philanthropists who have long supported local charitable causes. Mr. Viehmann began his career with Southwestern Bell in 1954 and held a wide variety of jobs with the company, including lineman, inspector, and construction manager. He retired in 1990 after 37 years with the company. Mrs. Viehmann spent her career working as an engineer and partnering with her father in his surveying business.
The Viehmanns enjoy traveling and have made it one of their life’s passions. The couple met in 1986 during a trip to Hong Kong, where they have returned almost every single year since that time. The Viehmanns have traveled extensively around the globe and are proud to be able to say that they have put their feet down in every single time zone in the entire world.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Viehmann have become actively involved with the Washington University School of Medicine community. They truly believe in giving back and helping improve the health and lives of others, and they both feel they have been fortunate to be able to pursue so many activities that they enjoy.
Together, the Viehmanns have generously established the Daniel C. and Betty B. Viehmann Distinguished Professorship in Orthopaedic Surgery. The Viehmanns also support cancer research at Washington University School of Medicine, and they are Life Members of the William Greenleaf Eliot Society.
